The Machame Route (also called the Whiskey Route) is one of the most popular and scenic trails to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak (5,895m). It is well-loved for its beautiful views, diverse landscapes, and a challenging but rewarding climb. Over 6 days, trekkers pass through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and icy glaciers before reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Though demanding, it offers high success rates for those prepared.
Kilimanjaro International Airport
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours, ~11 km
Landscape: Lush rainforest with tall trees, moss, and monkeys
What to Expect: Start at the gate, register, then begin the hike. The trail can be muddy and slippery. Arrive at camp tired but excited.
Trekking Time: 4–6 hours, ~5 km
Landscape: Transition from rainforest to moorland, with shrubs and giant heather
What to Expect: Steeper paths but shorter distance. Views of Shira Plateau and first clear sight of Kibo Peak (the main summit). Nights are colder.
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours, ~10 km
Landscape: Alpine desert with volcanic rocks and sparse vegetation
What to Expect: This is an acclimatization day – climb high, sleep low. Lunch near Lava Tower at high altitude (you may feel effects of thin air). Descend to Barranco Camp, a scenic spot beneath the Barranco Wall.
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours, ~5 km
Landscape: Rocky trails, alpine desert
What to Expect: Morning climb up the Barranco Wall (a fun scramble, not technical). After the wall, trek through valleys and ridges to Karanga. Good acclimatization stage.
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours, ~4 km
Landscape: Harsh alpine desert, little vegetation
What to Expect: Short but steep trek to Barafu. Rest and eat early, because summit night begins after midnight. You will prepare warm clothes, headlamp, and snacks.
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours, ~17 km total
Landscape: Arctic zone (snow, glaciers) → descent into moorland/forest
What to Expect: Begin around midnight, very cold and steep. Walk slowly (“pole pole”) to Stella Point (5,739m), then continue to Uhuru Peak – the Roof of Africa – just before sunrise. Amazing views, glaciers, and the crater.
After photos, descend back to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for the night.
