Kilimanjaro Umbwe 6 Days Trek

0
  • 3 Days
  • Group : 1-100 People
  • Guided Backpacking

The Umbwe Route is considered the shortest and steepest path up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is famous for its direct approach to the southern glaciers and the Western Breach. This route is recommended only for experienced and strong hikers because it is physically demanding and offers little time for acclimatization. However, the reward is spectacular — dramatic forest trails, steep ridges, and panoramic views of the mountain.
The trek usually takes 6 days (can be extended to 7 for acclimatization) and ends with the unforgettable summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

Itinerary

Day 1Umbwe Gate (1,600m) → Umbwe Camp (2,850m)

    • Distance: ~11 km

    • Time: 5–7 hours

    • Terrain: Steep forest trails, muddy and narrow paths

What to expect: Start at Umbwe Gate with registration, then hike through dense rainforest. The path is steep right from the beginning. You’ll hear birds, monkeys, and enjoy lush scenery. Overnight at Umbwe Camp.

Day 2Umbwe Camp (2,850m) → Barranco Camp (3,950m)

  • Distance: ~6 km

  • Time: 4–6 hours

  • Terrain: Steep ridges, mossy forest giving way to moorland

What to expect: Climb along a sharp ridge with fantastic views. The forest thins, revealing giant heather and Senecio plants. You’ll descend slightly into the Barranco Valley. Sleep at Barranco Camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall.

Day 3Barranco Camp (3,950m) → Karanga Camp (3,995m)

    • Distance: ~5 km

    • Time: 4–5 hours

    • Terrain: Climb the Barranco Wall (fun scramble), valleys and ridges

What to expect: Today begins with a scramble up the Barranco Wall — exciting but not dangerous. From the top, enjoy wide views of Kibo. Descend and climb a series of ridges before reaching Karanga Camp. This is a good acclimatization day.

Day 4Karanga Camp (3,995m) → Barafu Camp (4,673m)

  • Distance: ~4 km

  • Time: 3–4 hours

  • Terrain: Rocky, alpine desert

  • 📝 What to expect: Short but steep hike to Barafu (“ice”) Camp. You’ll arrive early, rest, eat, and prepare for the midnight summit push. The camp sits on a ridge with views of Mawenzi Peak and the path up Kibo.

Day 5Barafu Camp (4,673m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)

  • Distance: ~17 km (7 km ascent + 10 km descent)

  • Time: 10–14 hours total

  • Terrain: Loose scree, glaciers near summit, long descent through moorland

  • 📝 What to expect: Wake around midnight and begin the climb by headlamp. It’s slow, steep, and cold. After 6–8 hours you reach Stella Point (5,739m) and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate reaching Africa’s roof! Descend back to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for the night.
